Best Buy offers up 5 Android phones for $99.99 each

Best Buy is making this holiday season even brighter and more full of cheer with the news that they will be offering five (5) Android handsets for $99.99 each, no mail-in rebate required. The smartphones eligible for this price are the HTC Hero and Samsung Moment from Sprint, the myTouch 3G and Motorola CLIQ from T-Mobile, and the HTC DROID Eris from Verizon. No availability dates are yet known, but it may be a fair bet that we will see this pricing rolled out by Black Friday (this friday!) if Best Buy and the carriers want to get a jump on the holiday shopping feeding frenzy.

G1/Dream running Android 2.0. Sort of.

Although sluggish, slow and in need of further refinement, the industrious folks over at XDA-Developers have ported Android 2.0 to a T-Mobile G1. The G1 is underpowered to handle this Eclair goodness and should really stick to a Donut diet, but it’s fun and interesting to see what can be done with a little ROM cooking. The fact it’s running at all on the G1 provides a glimmer of hope that XDA-Developers may be able to refine it enough to have Android 2.0 running on a G1/Dream and even the myTouch 3G/Magic on a daily basis. We won’t hold our collective breath, but take a look at the video and see for yourself.

With the myTouch 3G as TMobile’s featured Android-powered phone right now and the Motorola CLIQ! arriving shortly, it’s a fire sale over at T-Mobile for the original Android flagship handset, the G1. At only $129.99, this is a great price for a great piece of hardware and an excellent Android OS. Rumor mill: Oprah involved in myTouch 3G promo

We never thought we would have the chance to mention Oprah and anything Android in the same story, unless it was some kind of Android/celebrity sighting. Rumor has it, however, that Oprah’s first show of her 24th season will include a huge promotion for T-Mobile and the myTouch 3G, giving customers $100 off instantly for the hot Android handset. According to the Chicago Tribune, part of Michigan Avenue in Chicago will be closed down on September 8th for live filming of her show. The show will air a couple days later, on September 10th, and the $100 off promo will run through September 24th via a “Special Web Offers” link on Oprah’s web site. Remember this is all rumor, so stay tuned to Oprah on the 10th for confirmation.

The app is a stand-alone GPS system that features 3D maps, display of local points of interest, gas prices, businesses, restaurant reviews, and more. TeleNav also displays traffic information on streets and highways. HTC Hero is G2 Touch on T-Mobile UK

With T-Mobile USA focused on rolling out the myTouch 3G, the folks on the other side of the pond are soon to have the HTC Hero, and T-Mobile UK is dubbing it the G2 Touch. This renaming (formerly G1 Touch) was revealed via a couple Tweets from the T-Mobile UK Official Twitter account and snagged by phandroid.com.

The renaming of T-Mobile UK’s HTC Hero is interesting in that it keeps the association with the G1, the first Android handset, while making a connection to the myTouch 3G that will show up in the U.S. Regardless of what they name it, will the G1 Touch/G2 Touch/G2 find it’s way into your pocket or purse as your go-to smartphone?

Google-branded phones with MS Exchange support? No problem!

So, we all thought that “Google experience” smartphones would not offer Microsoft Exchange support, but guess what – it looks like Google has no problem with this at all. As the T-Mobile myTouch 3G now seems to feature both the “with Google” logo and Exchange support, EngadgetMobile informs that a Google representative has told it that it has “never been Google’s policy” to restrict “Google experience” phones from having Exchange support.
