G1/Dream running Android 2.0. Sort of.

Tags: , , , , , , ,

Although sluggish, slow and in need of further refinement, the industrious folks over at XDA-Developers have ported Android 2.0 to a T-Mobile G1. The G1 is underpowered to handle this Eclair goodness and should really stick to a Donut diet, but it’s fun and interesting to see what can be done with a little ROM cooking. The fact it’s running at all on the G1 provides a glimmer of hope that XDA-Developers may be able to refine it enough to have Android 2.0 running on a G1/Dream and even the myTouch 3G/Magic on a daily basis. We won’t hold our collective breath, but take a look at the video and see for yourself.

Android-powered Acer Liquid

Tags: , ,

acer-liquid-a1-android-photos-0Homer Simpson is not the only thing that’s powered by Donuts. Acer’s new Android Donut-powered beauty is the Liquid, and unlike Homer, it’s a thing of beauty. Fortunately, the Liquid is not just a pretty face. There’s a lot of horsepower under the hood with a 1GHz Snapdragon processor. The Liquid is also nicely equipped with an 800×400 resolution touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera with autofocus, 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and social networking connectivity built right in. We don’t know when this slice of heaven will be available, but you can bet Homer’s last Donut that we’ll let you know when it’s coming!

Google adding multitouch with Android 2.0?

Tags: , , ,

picture-22The iPhone had it first, bringing onscreen pinching and stretching to the masses. The Palm Pre also has it. Thanks to the former and imitated by the latter, multitouch is now the benchmark in the smartphone touchscreen experience.

We have reported in the past that two more Android updates are coming this year, one minor and one major, and we have learned from Reuters that the minor update is alleged to be Android 1.6 Donut and the major update, Android 2.0 Eclair, is alleged to include multitouch. Google’s multitouch for Android will likely debut on a Motorola release given Motorola’s pledged support to the Android platform and the rumored release is just in time for the holiday season. Buckle up, because things will continue to get interesting.
