Rumor Mill: Motorola La Jolla entry-level Android handset?

Tags: , ,

Screen shot 2009-12-04 at 2.11.38 AMFresh out of the rumor mill is some intriguing information about a hinted-at device coming from Motorola. Having recently released the source code for the CLIQ, Motorola buried references in the code to devices like the Morrison (CLIQ), Motus, and Zeppelin. Apparently, “La Jolla” also pops up and may offer the following specifications:

  • Qualcomm 7201A Processor (528 MHz ARM11)
  • MAX7359 keypad
  • Kionix 3-axis accelerometer driver for LaJolla board
  • Motorola Halo i2c touchscreen with 240 x 400 resolution

Motorola has been hinting at an inexpensive entry-level device and now the new SDK supports 240 x 400 resolution, matching the alleged “La Jolla” perfectly. Perhaps we are jumping to conclusions, but it would be a good thing to have another Motorola Android device, especially if it’s easy on the wallet!

The Motorola CLIQ will be the first in what we hope is a long and fruitful relationship with Google’s Android OS, and it really looks like Motorola is getting off on the right foot by including some excellent pre-loaded apps. The first-time user experience with the CLIQ will be enhanced with apps like the following:

  • Telenav
  • Yahoo Mail
  • Digg
  • Rotten Tomatoes
  • Mint
  • Accuweather
  • Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, oh my!
  • USA Today Money
  • The whole host of Google services
  • and more!

This is great news to have so much to look forward to, already pre-installed on the Motorola CLIQ right out of the box. Of course, if you want to rid yourself of some of the bloat, then I’m sure you can get busy deleting. However, for the first time Android user and even the seasoned veteran, it’s nice to have a device with so much functionality from the moment you turn it on.

Pricing is still unknown for this slider device, but will likely be in the sub-$200 range to compete with the likes of the iPhone ($199, maybe?)

Ten (!) Android phones coming soon from Motorola?

Tags: ,

Screen shot 2009-09-18 at 3.21.06 PMScreen shot 2009-09-18 at 3.21.38 PMGlobal Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry released this morning that Motorola plans to release ten (10!) Android-based handsets in the next 6 – 10 months, starting with the Cliq. Prices will range from $39 to $399 with carrier subsidy.

Wow. When Motorola said they were going all-in to make Android phones, they weren’t kidding. This Android handset blitz should really help Motorola recapture some of that market share they used to hold when popular phones like the RAZR were all the rage. No further details are known at this time, but when more information is available about which handsets are going to which carriers, we’ll be sure to report it!

With the myTouch 3G as TMobile’s featured Android-powered phone right now and the Motorola CLIQ! arriving shortly, it’s a fire sale over at T-Mobile for the original Android flagship handset, the G1. At only $129.99, this is a great price for a great piece of hardware and an excellent Android OS. To get this deal, you may have to do a little hunting over on T-Mobile’s website because as we mentioned, the myTouch 3G is the bee’s knees right now on the T-Mobile site. If you’ve been holding out on picking up an Android phone, it’s doesn’t get much better than $129.99 for the G1.
