Nook gets improved performance, in-store offers with 1.1 update

Tags: , ,

Screen shot 2009-12-22 at 11.46.59 PMThe Nook (from Barnes & Noble) has faced stiff competition since it entered the e-reader market where Amazon’s Kindle and Kindle 2 have dominated. One of the big criticisms of the Android-powered Nook has been it’s sluggishness, but now Barnes & Noble has rolled out the 1.1 firmware update to address the Nook’s performance issues and has added some additional promotional features.

Along with being a better, faster Nook, the 1.1 firmware update has enabled the Nook to receive local promotions for Nook owners to download and read free content while in a Barnes & Noble store. The promotions will also include freebies from in-house Starbucks and possibly entire books for reading while within the store. The promotional features are a great way for B&N to differentiate the Nook from other e-readers out there. If you are a Nook owner and have received the firmware update, do you notice a performance difference? Please comment!

Android apps may work on Barnes & Noble ‘Nook’

Tags: , ,

Screen shot 2009-10-26 at 5.01.49 PMJust the other day I bought a book at Barnes & Noble (yep, reading the old-fashioned way – ink and paper!), and in my shopping bag the salesperson had placed an advertisement for their new eBook reader, the Nook. This is an intriguing product, particularly since curiosity may already be piqued by Amazon’s Kindle for those interested in eBook reader platforms.

Why is it so intriguing? Glad you asked. The Nook will be powered by none other than Android and will offer an e-Ink display for reading and a secondary color display for viewing more colorful content. Allegedly, the Nook will not only be powered by Android, but will run Android apps. It’s not yet clear if the apps will be pre-loaded and unalterable or if the Nook will allow access to all apps available in the Android Market. The Nook will be available at the end of November for $259. If it does happen to access all Android apps, this could be a no-brainer for Android fans that desire an alternative to the Kindle.
