Although sluggish, slow and in need of further refinement, the industrious folks over at XDA-Developers have ported Android 2.0 to a T-Mobile G1. The G1 is underpowered to handle this Eclair goodness and should really stick to a Donut diet, but it’s fun and interesting to see what can be done with a little ROM cooking. The fact it’s running at all on the G1 provides a glimmer of hope that XDA-Developers may be able to refine it enough to have Android 2.0 running on a G1/Dream and even the myTouch 3G/Magic on a daily basis. We won’t hold our collective breath, but take a look at the video and see for yourself.

Amid the flurry of handset-building activity going on over at HTC, it’s rumored that they are already working with Android 2.0 handsets and preparing them for market. No timetables or launch details are yet available, but it’s suspected that the HTC Dragon is a likely candidate to sport Android 2.0 once it is launched.
At this point that is all we know from HTC – they have Android 2.0 and are busy playing with it, but no promises as to where, when and how any 2.0 handsets will be released. It will happen, but all in good time.
Android Donut has just been release to developers, and Google has packed it with some really good stuff. Along with CDMA compatibility for possible future Android handsets on Sprint and Verizon in the U.S., the rest of the update is reported to have the following:
Improved universal search
Text-to-speech support
Automated backups
Changed connectivity bar allowing one-touch home screen control of WiFi, Bluetooth, etc.
WPA Enterprise encryption support
VPN functionality
Other performance improvements
Several screenshots are available over at Android Community and as more information becomes available, we’ll post it here.
The HTC Hero has a great-looking Android ROM with gorgeous skins, and if you are rolling with your G1 and wish it were the HTC Hero, there’s a way to make it happen. We are by no means encouraging you to hack your G1 and we take no responsibility whatsoever if you end up bricking your phone, but the clever folks at xda-developers got their mitts on the HTC Hero’sAndroid ROM and have successfully ported it to a G1, complete with all kinds of customizations and enhancements not before found on the G1. Accomplishing this feat requires flashing your device and a myriad of other steps, so be EXTREMELY careful that you get it right, or get someone more tech savvy that can get it right for you. When it’s all said and done, you could very well have a G1 with a new lease on life.
Having seen the first images of what is said to be the G1 V2 for T-Mobile, a number of theories regarding the possible origins of the device are floating about. One of these has it the G1 V2 is actually a handset to be manufactured by Motorola. Crazy as it may seem, there is a piece of common sense here with the source indicating that the three touch-sensitive keys on the front side of the device indeed look like Motorola stuff.
However, a TmoToday user has come up with a completely different story, claiming the G1 V2 is “still” an HTC phone and also going on the manufacturer wants to redesign the appearance of its Android G1, since quite a few users don´t like the original device. Moreover, writers of the blog believe the G1 V2 is codenamed Bigfoot.
And here is where it gets even more complicated. Mobile-Reviews has posted images of two rumored Samsung handsets, said to run Android 2.0, the Spica and the BigFoot. What’s interesting indeed is that the image showing the BigFoot reveals a device similar to the G1 V2, showed by BGR. But does this mean the BigFoot will be manufacturerd by Samsung?
So, what do you think – is it likely the G1 V2 turns out to be a Motorola phone or it´s an HTC device? Could it actually be made by Samsung or these images are just a mock-up?
