04Eve of Adam debut and Android flavored iPad killer has videoLast week, we reported to you about the Adam. No, not the Coleco home PC that was an incredible flop in the 80’s which bankrupted the toy maker. This Adam is an Android flavored tablet that is running on Android 2.1 (hear that, Motorola?). The Adam seems to be equipped with plenty of features that are not on the iPad, such as a rotating 3MP camera with AF and a trackpad on the back of the device. Web site Technoholik made up a chart comparing Apple’s new tablet and Adam. The latter seems to come up ahead on most items except for the screen. The iPad sports a 9.7 inch display with resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels while Norton Ink’s machine weighs in with a 10 inch display and resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels. While Adam can multitask and supports flash 10.1 on the browser, the iPad does neither. While the latter has no capability for adding storage, the former comes with a microSD slot. The entry level iPad costs $499 with availability starting in April/May. Adam has a price range of $327 to $800 with launch expected for June/July. We expect to see a lot more of Adam at the MWC as this is one killer not afraid to show his face to the public.

Motorola CLIQ XT to come out next month with T-Mobile

Motorola today used the MWC as a stage to announce the successor to its first Android phone, the CLIQ. In the US market, the smartphone will be called CLIQ XT, while in Europe, it will be offered as the QUENCH (the CLIQ’s European variant was named DEXT). OK, enough about the naming. What will the Motorola CLIQ XT bring, that current CLIQ users (or current Android users as a whole) might want to have? We are not really sure. The CLIQ XT dumps the side-sliding QWERTY keyboard of its predecessor, but keeps Motorola’s social-centric MOTOBLUR interface. The touch-sensitive screen measures 3.1 inches, so again nothing new here. An improvement will be found in the browser, as it will feature support for Adobe Flash Lite. The Motorola CLIQ XT will be running Android 1.5, not something to get excited about, but we’re sure it will get an update to newer version soon enough. (We have also heard that the original CLIQ will get an update too…)

Motorola has scheduled the CLIQ XT’s launch for next month. Stateside, it will be available through T-Mobile. The price however is not yet known.

Stay tuned for our hands-on with the Motorola CLIQ XT later today!

Sony Ericsson introduces the Vivaz pro, Xperia X10 mini and Xperia X10 mini pro

At an event taking place in Barcelona, just before the start of the MWC 2010, Sony Ericsson made quite an impressing show. First off, the company revealed its strategy for the future. It looks like the GreenHeart series will continue to grow. The president of the company said that all their devices in 2011 will be made with ecology in mind. Congratulations to the manufacturer!

Sony Ericsson also showed its design ideas, which we have already seen in some products – smooth curves, inspired by the human body that fit perfectly into the hand. The advantages of the UXP interface also got described. We have seen this one in the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10.

Enough about the ideas. What matters is how they get integrated in real devices. Well, the new phones by Sony Ericsson are truly intriguing. Here they come, the Vivaz pro, Xperia X10 mini and Xperia X10 mini pro.

First is the Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro. You might be already guessing that it will be more oriented towards business, packing a slide-out four-row QWERTY keyboard. The impressive part is the keyboard has only added 2 millimeters to the thickness of the device. The other difference with Vivaz is that the new model sports a 5MP camera, as opposed to 8MP, but the ability to capture 720p HD video is still there. The rest of the specs are identical – 3.2-inch screen, GPS, Wi-Fi and HSDPA support.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini and Xperia X10 mini pro look very promising. These are smaller versions of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 – the first Android phone by the company, which will come out in March. The two handsets are sharing the same characteristics, but the mini pro has a four-row QWERTY keyboard. So, you can expect the smallest Android devices, equipped with  2.55″ screens with QVGA resolution, 5MP cameras, GPS, Wi-Fi and 3G. They will work with Android 1.6 and the personalized interface by Sony Ericsson, called UX. The interface itself will be tweaked in order to be more comfortable for one-handed use – in the four corners of the screen there will be icons leading to different functions, while the rest of the elements will be as big as possible. The phones will have access to both the Android Market and the Play Now portal. Both devices will be offered in several colors – black, yellow, white, pink and red.

The Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro, Xperia X10 mini and Xperia X10 mini pro will be released in the second quarter. Information about their prices is still unavailable.

UPDATED: Samsung I8520 is an Android phone with built-in projector

While we were examining Samsung’s official Mobile World Congress page we stumbled upon the Samsung I8520. By the looks of it, the I8520 will be an Android 2.1 based phone with some quite impressive specs. First of all, we should mention the large 3.7-inch WVGA Super AMOLED screen (utilizing the new technology by Samsung). The camera is listed as an 8-megapixel one with autofocus and flash and the phone will also offer HD video playback (not sure yet if it has recording in HD). The star of the show though is the built-in projector by Texas Instruments that will let you build your own home cinema. Over Android, the manufacturer has placed its TouchWiz 3.0 user interface in order to provide an experience similar to its other phones.

The design of the Samsung Halo I8520 is pretty simple so to say, but this doesn’t matter too much as we believe this is a phone targeted at the tech buffs out there, and not to users who demand style from their handsets. The I8520 did not get introduced at the event tonight, but we think we’ll see more from it pretty soon.

Motorola releases timeline for Android 2.1 update

After it appeared that Motorola was pulling an upgrade to Android 2.1 for the DROID this week, the company didn’t want to have any more confusion over whom said what, when and to whom. So, the Schaumburg based company decided to cook up a little schedule that gives us a better idea when to expect each eligible Motorola Android model, to get the OTA upgrade, to  2.1. According to the schedule, the first device up for an upgrade to Android 2.1 is…The Motorola DROID. No surprise there. According to droid Life, the update will be coming out “soon”. That is closer than “whenever” but longer than “done”. Over in Europe, the DROID’s sister device, the MILESTONE, already supports pinch-to-zoom in the browser. Unlike the DROID’s version of 2.1, the MILESTONE will not have the news and weather widgets that we’ve already seen on the Nexus One. The upgrade will come in the first quarter of 2010. Two other versions of the Motorola MILESTONE, the models for Latin America and the Asia-Pacific, are undergoing evaluation and no upgrade time has been announced.

In the second quarter of 2010, those owners of the Motorola CLIQ should see an upgrade to Android 2.1. The overseas name of the handset is the Motorola DEXT and the Latin American model will get Android 2.1 in this year’s 3Q as will Asia-Pacific DEXT owners. European users should know that there is no set upgrade date for their DEXT as the move to Android 2.1 there is under consideration.

The link to the timeline came from a Motorola Forum manager…no, not the same one that started off this mess last week when he posted and then was forced to remove a list of what changes Android 2.1 will bring to the DROID. For what it’s worth, we think that it will end up being that the list was right on the money.

Motorola DROID heading to AT&T and Luke Wilson?

comments
1

Remember that AT&T commercial where diners had their AT&T smartphones replaced by Verizon branded models? There’s the shot of that lady waving the Motorola DROID back and forth, asking, “Where is my cool phone?” If  web site ‘wireless goodness’ is right, that cool phone with the AT&T branding could very well be a GSM version of the Motorola DROID. The site just pointed out that comparing an FCC lab test of the DROID with a new Motorola device shows some positive connections between the two. First, both models use the same exact battery, SNN6843A. The DROID carries FCC ID# IHDP56KC1 and the mystery device is known as IHDP56KZ2. The latter unit is loaded with AT&T’s WCDMA frequencies and taking that into consideration along with the similarities of the two devices-including the battery-suggests a version of the DROID could be AT&T bound. Now this is obviously quite a long shot and it should be pointed out that the DROID shares the same battery as its stablemate Motorola CLIQ. The only thing is that the CLIQ is already quadband GSM and as the site points out, it is unlikely that Motorola would make a new CLIQ just to add AT&T’s bands. So for now, Matlock fans, we have us a mystery. The lady in the ad might be happy to know that her cool device might already be in her hands.

Google Maps Navigation hits Europe soon; hopefully

06Google Maps Navigation hits Europe soon- hopefullyAndroid 2.0 and above owners have the privilege of using Google Maps Navigation for some time here in the US – providing a free alternative to other popular voice guided GPS services. Unfortunately for our friends across the big pond, Europe has been in the dark when it comes to the application. You’d think it’d be so simple to just launch the service, but it’s actually a bit more complicated than one can imagine. In Europe, Google needs to work with local partners such as Navteq (Nokia) or Tele Atlas (TomTom) to provide maps of Europe. They could potentially be holding the required maps cache that Google needs to properly implement navigation. Still there is a rumor about how Google is working with a company in the Netherlands to quickly get this feature out to Europe. Their pleas aren’t falling on deaf ear, thankfully, as the recent withdrawal of Navteq from the Android Market might indicate its eventual arrival on the continent.

Android sees 1074% worldwide growth from 2008

04Android sees 1074 worldwide growth from 200805Android sees 1074 worldwide growth from 2008Before looking into this, just think back to the fall of 2008 when T-Mobile unleashed the G1 to consumers who’ve been waiting to get their hands on the first ever Android phone. The next thing you know is that 2008 was over and the dawn of 2009 was here – with that, it brought along the rise of Android to its prestigious beginnings. Canalys reports that 2009 laid claim to the fundamental rise of the Android platform in the world market – roughly 7.7 million Android powered handsets were sold in 2009 which made up approximately 4.7 percent of the overall smartphone sales. When you compare that to figures from 2008, it clearly defines their notoriety in the market with a 1,074 percent growth from 2008 – which is looking to lay claim to the world’s number two operating system by 2013. Although they posted an extraordinary amount of growth in a single year, they’re still far away from the tight grasp that Symbian holds at 47.2 percent of the share in 2009. The biggest loser by far through this whole experience is none other than Windows Mobile – posting a -26.4 percent decline from 2008. Still not out of contention, Microsoft may be brewing something spectacular as we head into the beginnings of MWC. With Android  growing and gaining support, we’ll see how it manages to evolve itself in order to keep things fresh for the many users out there.

Android 2.1 will make its way to the Samsung Moment on February 22?

03Android 2.1 will make its way to the Samsung Moment on February 22There are a lot of Android handsets that are anticipating to see Android 2.1 land some time soon to existing models, but now the Samsung Moment can be added to the list with a potential date lined up. Although the Moment is still running Android 1.5 and could’ve been easily lost among the other big named Android phones expected to make the transition to 2.1, it may see light sooner than expected – the first wave is expected to happen beginning on February 22. Unfortunately it will not be an over the air process, instead it will require owners to visit Sprint stores to actually get it installed. It’s still not a terribly bad thing when you consider that the Samsung Moment is reported to get 2.1 as opposed to 2.0. If you do plan on skipping the first wave, then you can sit back at home as the second one will go live on March 8 – that one will be pushed out via OTA process.  It’s yet another reason why Samsung Moment owners can rejoice – let’s just hope it comes out on time with the latest version

HTC Legend expected to go on sale in March according to Dutch web site

News surrounding the HTC Legend have been slowly trickling in – with each one providing a glimpse into what is expected out of the HTC camp. After it was caught in the flesh a few days ago, it surprisingly made another appearance on a Dutch web site with an expected debut to happen in March. The Dutch wireless carrier KPN also let out some additional specs which aren’t too awe inspiring in light of other recent news regarding HTC Android phones – it’ll be powered a 600 MHz processor with Android 2.1 packing some heat from the onset. Additionally KPN will be taking email sign-ups in advance for those who are curious about the smartphone. Some have already begun to compare it with the HTC Hero partly due to its uni-body aluminum frame and somewhat prominent chin – all the things we know and love about the original Sense UI starter. Aside from all the pre-existing specs we know about the phone, we’re hoping for it to become official by the time MWC rolls along.
