“Danger, Will Robinson!” Ok, maybe not so much. Asustek, the Taiwanese computer manufacturing juggernaut, is planning to build the EeeBot, an Android-powered educational robot intended to promote the Android OS. The Taiwanese government is sponsoring the project and Asustek is subsidizing a portion of the program to make the robots affordable for families.
Even though Asustek is throwing money into the project also, they hope to recoup their subsidy through the sale of additional services and content for the child-friendly robot. A prototype should be ready in about two years for trial purposes. Asustek predicts the robots will generate a yearly output valued at NT$5 billion in five years — not too shabby for a little green ‘droid. No details are available yet regarding the color and appearance of the robot, but maybe Asustek will take a cue from the already-popular and visually appealing Green Android image.
